This is our Champions League DFS early look 14 October for the Fanteam Wednesday Main Event. The slate has seven matches, all kicking off together at 19:00 UTC. We have a 112 budget and a cap of three players per club. First kickoff is about 20 hours away, so treat this as a map, not a final answer.
The shape of the slate is clear. Two favourites stand out. Stuttgart (VFB) hold a 73.56% win chance against SLV and project for 2.66 goals, the biggest number on the board. Aston Villa follow at 58.11% against Fenerbahçe with 2.05 projected goals. After that, the night tightens up. Real Madrid against Roma, Manchester City against PSG and Dortmund against Bodø/Glimt are all closer to coin flips with plenty of goals expected. AEK and Shakhtar sit almost dead level at 1.43 and 1.42 projected goals.
That mix rewards a balanced build. Lean on the two clear favourites, then take attacking exposure from the open games where both sides should score.
Captain options for the Champions League DFS early look 14 October
Our safe captain list is short and makes sense. Johan Manzambi tops every projection on the slate at 5.66 points for a 10.6 salary. He has a 36.6% chance to score and a ceiling of 12.84, also the highest we have. He gets that from a Villa side projected for 2.05 goals against a Fenerbahçe team with a 12.37% clean sheet chance. He is the captain in our best lineup.
Deniz Undav is next at 5.07, attached to the strongest team total of the night. The catch is his 14.3 salary. Doubling him is fine, but fitting him costs you more than Manzambi does. Kylian Mbappé projects almost the same at 5.06 for 12.4, and his 41.0% chance to score is the second best among the safe options. Real Madrid project for 2.0 goals against Roma, and Mbappé is our vice-captain behind Manzambi.
The vice-captain only matters if your captain does not play. Pair Manzambi with a near-certain starter from another club so your backup is not sunk by the same team news.
For the big-swing picks, Erling Haaland is the obvious one. His 4.75 projection trails the safe trio, but his 42.7% chance to score is the best on the slate and his ceiling sits at 12.08. City against PSG projects for 1.87 goals to 1.57. That is a match where one big performance can decide a contest. Troy Parrott at 10.4 is a cheaper route into Betis, who project for 1.69 goals against Porto. His ceiling is 10.37.
Jeff Chabot is the unusual one: a defender captain. His 3.66 projection is modest, but he has a 10.8% chance to score, a 9.34 ceiling and plays behind a Stuttgart side with a 36.84% clean sheet chance, the best on the slate. A goal plus a clean sheet on a doubled defender would move very few lineups. It is a niche play, not a default.

Stacks to build around
The pairing we like most is John McGinn with Manzambi. Together they cost 21.7 and project for 10.6 points, the best combined number we have. It appears in 7 of our 15 lineups. McGinn projects 4.9 with a 23.9% chance to score and a 12.11 ceiling, so this is not just Manzambi with a passenger.
Real Madrid offer three ways in. Bellingham with Mbappé projects 9.7 for 24.1. Vinicius Junior with Mbappé projects 9.6 for 24.3. Bellingham with Vinicius projects 9.2 for 23.6. Our lineups spread across all three rather than forcing one. Bellingham’s 29.1% chance to score is slightly ahead of Vinicius at 24.4%, which is why we lean towards the Mbappé and Bellingham version when we can only fit two.
The City pairing of Antoine Semenyo and Haaland costs 23.9 and projects 9.0. It sits in 2 of our 15 lineups. It is the lower projection of the group, but it fits naturally with a Haaland captain.
Best stacks, 14 October
| Stack | Team | Salary | Proj | In our lineups |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John McGinn + Johan Manzambi | AVL | 21.7 | 10.6 | 7 of 15 |
| Jude Bellingham + Vinicius Junior | RMA | 23.6 | 9.2 | 3 of 15 |
| Jude Bellingham + Kylian Mbappé | RMA | 24.1 | 9.7 | 2 of 15 |
| Vinicius Junior + Kylian Mbappé | RMA | 24.3 | 9.6 | 2 of 15 |
| Antoine Semenyo + Erling Haaland | MCI | 23.9 | 9.0 | 2 of 15 |
A note on Stuttgart defenders. Their match line makes them tempting, but the stacking penalty applies when several defenders or goalkeepers from one team all collect clean-sheet points. One Stuttgart defender, or a defender plus Dennis Seimen in goal, is usually enough.
Value by position
Most of the cheap value on this slate comes from one place: SLV. That is a little awkward. SLV have a 10.58% win chance and a 6.18% clean sheet chance. Their cheap attackers and midfielders are still useful because their salaries are so low, but none of them are matchup plays.
Goalkeepers
Seimen leads goalkeepers at 3.68, but he costs 11.4. Thibaut Courtois projects 3.47 for 7.7, and his ceiling of 8.09 is the highest of any goalkeeper. That gap of 3.7 in salary for 0.21 points is why Courtois is in our best lineup. Gianluigi Donnarumma at 7.2 and Diogo Costa at 6.9 are similar. At the bottom, Pierluigi Gollini projects 2.85 for 5.8, a save-heavy option with Roma conceding a projected 2.0 goals.
Defenders
Josha Vagnoman (3.85) and Maximilian Mittelstädt (3.81) project highest, but each has only a 50% chance to start. Chabot is the safer Stuttgart choice at 0.88. Outside Stuttgart, Marc Bartra projects 3.13 for 9.0 with a 10.2% chance to score, and Betis have a 27.45% clean sheet chance. Pau Torres matches that 3.13 projection for 9.8 behind Villa. The cheapest useful option in our best lineup is Josko Gvardiol at 6.9 for 2.89.
Midfielders
Peter Pokorný is the best points-per-salary player on the slate, 2.61 for 4.3. Cristian Martínez (4.4) and Alen Mustafic (4.6) are similar, though Mustafic is only listed as possible. Marco Asensio at 6.9 projects 3.34 with an 8.59 ceiling and gives you a different team. Higher up, Alisson of Shakhtar projects 4.09 for 8.9 and makes our best lineup from the even AEK game.
Forwards
Andraz Sporar at 5.5 projects 3.13 with a 24.6% chance to score. That is a strong chance to score for the price, even against the slate’s best defence. He is the cheapest way to fit three premium forwards elsewhere.
Our best lineup shows how it fits together: Mbappé, Guirassy and Haaland up front, Manzambi and McGinn in midfield, and exactly 112 spent for 52.6 projected points.
Underdogs
Ole Didrik Blomberg is our favourite underdog. Bodø/Glimt only win 30.26% of the time, but they project for 1.7 goals against Dortmund, and Dortmund’s 18.01% clean sheet chance is low for a favourite. Blomberg projects 4.23 with a 29.2% chance to score for 9.3. He is in our best lineup.
Ousmane Dembélé at 10.3 projects 4.28 with a 34.5% chance to score, with PSG at 31.79% to win. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (3.77 for 9.7) is the cheaper PSG piece.
Roma give 26.9% to win but 1.5 projected goals. Donyell Malen has the best chance to score of their group at 34.6% for 9.4. Matías Soulé (4.18) and Paulo Dybala (4.19) project slightly higher, though their chances to score are lower. Any of the three works as a contrarian piece against a Real Madrid stack.
Who to watch before lock
Lineups usually land about an hour before kickoff, and several names need checking. Jamie Leweling projects 4.42 but has a 68% chance to start. Jérémy Doku, Antony and Pablo Fornals sit at the same 68%. Borja Sainz of Porto is listed as unexpected at 50%.
Players to watch before lock
| Player | Team | Salary | Proj | Chance of starting | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jamie Leweling | VFB | 13.9 | 4.42 | 68% | Possible |
| Jérémy Doku | MCI | 10.9 | 3.70 | 68% | Possible |
| Antony | BET | 10.5 | 3.56 | 68% | Possible |
| Pablo Fornals | BET | 10.3 | 3.44 | 68% | Possible |
| Borja Sainz | FCP | 7.8 | 3.16 | 50% | Unexpected |
Remember how the safety net works. If one of your players does not start, the closest-priced cheaper starter at the same position from his club comes in. A player who only comes off the bench scores nothing. Rostering one of these doubts is a calculated risk, and that matters most for Vagnoman and Mittelstädt at 50%.
