Twelve games on the main slate, a long injury report and three totals near 240. These NBA DFS picks for 28 October start with our projections, then adjust for role, matchup and who is missing. Fanteam is the main focus, and DraftKings, FanDuel and Yahoo each get a short section.

One note before the numbers. According to the latest injury report, plenty of key rotation players are out, but several stars are not listed at all. That does not make them confirmed healthy. Lineups are not final, and the Lakers have not submitted a report yet.

Games and pace

Totals are the cleanest read on pace and scoring environment. Here is how the slate looks, with team implied totals in brackets.

  • NOP-DEN, 241.7: Denver (123.1) against New Orleans (118.7). The highest total on the board.
  • MIA-ATL, 241.5: Miami (121.0) and Atlanta (120.6), almost dead even.
  • WAS-CLE, 237.6: Cleveland (123.2) against Washington (114.4).
  • PHI-IND, 237.2: Philadelphia (121.7) against Indiana (115.5).
  • UTA-SAS, 235.5: San Antonio carries the highest team total on the slate at 125.7, with Utah at 109.8.
  • DET-CHA, 215.5: the lowest total. Detroit sits at 110.6 and Charlotte at 104.9.

The slower, lower-scoring games are Detroit-Charlotte, Orlando-Toronto (222.4) and Milwaukee-Houston (222.4). Points will be harder to find there, so the price has to be right.

NBA DFS picks for Fanteam

Fanteam uses seven players, a 90 cap and at most seven from one team. Value here is projected points divided by salary, and a ratio around 3 is par. Anything well above it is a bargain.

Top plays

Player Pos Team Salary Proj Value
Nikola Jokic C DEN 20.0 60.3 3.01
Giannis Antetokounmpo PF MIA 17.0 55.9 3.29
Luka Doncic PG LAL 19.9 55.9 2.81
Jalen Johnson PF ATL 15.8 50.0 3.16
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander PG OKC 17.2 48.9 2.84
Anthony Davis C WAS 14.8 46.2 3.12
Karl-Anthony Towns PF NYK 14.2 46.0 3.24
Joel Embiid C PHI 14.0 45.9 3.28

Jokic has the highest projection on the slate at 60.3. He faces a weak New Orleans defense in the top-total game, and I expect him to be owned lightly for a player this good. Denver’s Cameron Johnson is doubtful according to the latest injury report, but Jokic is not listed at all, so I would wait for the lineup to be final.

Giannis is the best pure value among the stars at 3.29. Miami comes in desperate, his usage should be huge, and the Atlanta matchup is not easy. The price still works. Jalen Johnson at 15.8 is the other Atlanta piece I like in a game with a 241.5 total.

Towns is my favorite mid-priced big. Chicago’s Nic Claxton is out according to the latest injury report, and I prefer Towns in that frontcourt matchup. Embiid is a conditional play for me. If he is active and Tyrese Haliburton is out or limited (Haliburton is questionable), Embiid has a very good matchup. Ivica Zubac is also out for Indiana.

Doncic and Gilgeous-Alexander project well but are priced a little too high, with ratios under 3. I like Doncic in a game where the Clippers are missing Brandon Ingram, Bradley Beal, Rui Hachimura and Max Strus, but I would rather pay for Giannis. Anthony Davis has a strong projection, but I do not like the Cleveland matchup and would play him only if I had the salary left.

Value plays

Player Pos Team Salary Proj Value
Tari Eason SF HOU 7.7 31.4 4.08
Jaylin Williams PF OKC 6.8 26.1 3.84
Isaiah Jackson PF LAC 7.5 28.3 3.77
Jay Huff C IND 6.3 22.9 3.63
CJ McCollum PG ATL 8.8 31.9 3.62
Rudy Gobert C MIN 9.3 33.1 3.56
Jonathan Kuminga PF MIN 8.5 30.3 3.56

Eason tops the list at 4.08. Alperen Sengun, Steven Adams and Marcus Smart are all out for Houston according to the latest injury report. That leaves the rotation short on bodies, and he is priced below the role he will take on. He will be popular, and I am fine with that.

Minnesota is the other thin spot. Anthony Edwards is out, which pushes more usage toward LaMelo Ball and opens up space for Gobert and Kuminga. Both are priced under their projection. Jaylin Williams is a cheap way into an OKC team that is missing Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace and Alex Caruso. Huff gets a clearer path with Zubac out, though I would confirm that once lineups are final. McCollum at 8.8 is a decent way to take a piece of the Miami-Atlanta game.

Fades

Player Pos Team Salary Proj Value
Kel’el Ware C MIL 10.7 23.4 2.19
AJ Dybantsa SF WAS 10.3 23.4 2.27
Josh Giddey SG CHI 13.2 33.1 2.51
Trey Murphy III SF NOP 12.2 31.6 2.59

These are not bad players. They are badly priced tonight. Ware and Dybantsa each cost over 10 for a 23.4 projection, and Dybantsa is also listed as available with an ankle sprain according to the latest injury report. Giddey at 13.2 needs a big night to pay off. Murphy sits in a high-total game, but 12.2 is too much for the projection. I would rather spend that salary on Gobert and Kuminga.

DraftKings

DraftKings uses eight players and a $50,000 cap. Value is points per $1,000, and about 5 is par. Jokic ($12,000) and Giannis ($10,200) lead the projections. Giannis has the better ratio at 5.48, and Jalen Johnson at $9,500 is also strong at 5.26. The cheap end of the pool mirrors Fanteam.

Player Pos Team Salary Proj Value
Tari Eason SF HOU $4,600 31.4 6.83
Jaylin Williams PF OKC $4,100 26.1 6.37
Isaiah Jackson C LAC $4,500 28.3 6.29
Jay Huff C IND $3,800 22.9 6.03
CJ McCollum PG ATL $5,300 31.9 6.02
Jonathan Kuminga PF MIN $5,100 30.3 5.94

FanDuel

FanDuel uses nine players and a $60,000 cap. Value is again points per $1,000. Jokic is $12,000 and Giannis $11,500 here, which makes Giannis pricier than on DraftKings. Gilgeous-Alexander ($10,000) and Jalen Johnson ($9,400) are the better ratios among the top options. For a cheaper build, the value list is below.

Player Pos Team Salary Proj Value
Draymond Green PF GSW $4,200 26.3 6.26
Jaylin Williams PF OKC $3,900 23.9 6.13
Ayo Dosunmu SG MIN $4,900 29.4 6.00
CJ McCollum PG ATL $5,300 31.2 5.89
Jared McCain SG OKC $4,300 25.1 5.84
Mikal Bridges SF NYK $4,400 25.5 5.80

Dosunmu is the one I like most. With Edwards out, I expect him to take on extra shots in a good matchup against Golden State.

Yahoo

Yahoo uses eight players, a $200 cap and at most six from one team. Value is a plain ratio, and above 1 beats the price. Giannis at 50 is the standout among the top plays at 1.11, while Jokic at 60 sits just under 1. The best ratios are all in the cheap range.

Player Pos Team Salary Proj Value
Keaton Wagler PG LAC 10 26.0 2.60
Yaxel Lendeborg SF GSW 14 36.1 2.58
Jared McCain SG OKC 13 25.1 1.93
Paul Reed C DET 18 33.8 1.88
Kobe Sanders SG LAC 12 22.4 1.87
Ja’Kobe Walter PG TOR 14 25.0 1.79

Lendeborg is questionable according to the latest injury report, so treat him as a play to confirm before lock. Walter picks up more work for Toronto with Kawhi Leonard out, which is why he sits on this list.
